How to disassemble a washing machine drain pump with your own hands

If the automatic machine, while draining, suddenly freezes or stops working altogether, you will have to check the pump. Externally, the pump may look "like new", but inside the part a huge amount of dirt and debris accumulates, which prevents its normal operation. We will tell you how to remove the unit from the housing and disassemble it.

Dismantling and removing pump parts

To disassemble the drain pump of the washing machine and clean it, it is not necessary to resort to the help of a master. The work will not take much time, it is easy to cope with it if you follow the recommendations. The pump of all machines is located in the lower part of the body, under the tank. Usually you can get access to it through the bottom of the washing machine. The algorithm of actions when disassembling the drain pump will be as follows:

  • Disconnect the washing machine from the power supply,
  • Close the valve responsible for the water supply,
  • Detach the drain and filler hoses from the body,
  • Find the trash filter. Depending on the model of the washing machine, it may be hidden by the lower decorative panel or a small hatch,
  • Cover the floor around the washing machine with unnecessary rags, place a low basin under the bottom, in the area where the waste filter is located,
  • Unscrew the drain filter plug and make sure that the liquid flows from the hole into the container,
  • Carefully place the front camera on its left side,
  • If there is a tray under the machine, unscrew the fixing bolts and remove it,
  • Unscrew the screws securing the pump to the housing,
  • Take a photo of the wiring diagram for the element, then disconnect the contacts and pipes,
  • Turn the pump from right to left, slightly “sink” it into the housing and pull the part out.

Next, you need to dismantle the impeller, otherwise you won’t be able to disassemble the pump. Proceed as follows:

  • Pry up the impeller latches and remove it. If the crosspiece does not come off, blow hot air (hair dryer) onto the shank and try again,
  • After removing the magnet and impeller, clean them from dirt,
  • Remove the electromagnet from the shaft. Now you can see the bearing.

After cleaning the inside of the pump with your own hands, assemble the housing in the reverse order. Then the pump is put back in its original place, the wiring and pipes are connected to it. In order not to make a mistake when connecting the contacts, be

How to ring a coil?

If no defects in the pump are visually detected, you will have to check it with a special device. To diagnose the pump, you will need a multimeter - it is sold in specialized stores and costs about 600-2600 rupees. Using a tester, you can ring the coil of the element. The algorithm of actions is as follows:

  • Switch the multimeter to voltmeter mode,
  • Place the device probes against the coil contacts,
  • Evaluate the values on the tester display.

If the multimeter screen shows 0 or 1, you will have to change the pump. It is not advisable to repair the part; it is better to buy and install a new unit. When a three-digit number is displayed, the problem may not be in the burnt-out pump motor, but in the control board of the washing machine. For a more accurate diagnosis, you will have to call a technician.

We will extend the service life of the part

Manufacturers of washing equipment announce a fairly long standard service life of the drain pump - 8-10 years. Whether the element will last that long largely depends on the user. To prevent the unit from failing earlier, it is important to provide the automatic machine with proper care. Usually the pump fails prematurely due to:

  • Penetration of foreign objects into the drainage system,
  • Loading too much dirty and dusty laundry into the drum,
  • Getting paper clips, keys, paper, bolts, matches and other items forgotten in pockets inside.

To ensure that the water pump of your automatic washing machine lasts as long as possible, you need to follow basic rules:

  • Shake things out before washing, make sure there is nothing left in the pockets,
  • Laundry with pieces of dirt should be pre-soaked in a basin and only then loaded into the drum,
  • Install a filter in front of the machine's inlet hose for additional purification of tap water,
  • Periodically use various means to prevent scale formation,
  • Make sure that there is no water left in the tank after washing.

In fact, it is quite easy to disassemble the pump yourself. If you follow the instructions, you can do the job in literally an hour. To prevent clogging of the pump, you need to clean the debris filter once every three months and remove hair and threads that have wound around the impeller blades.
