How to change the temperature sensor in a washing machine?

Each element of the washing machine plays an important role in its proper operation. Thus, the temperature sensor is responsible for heating the water to the desired temperature and also prevents it from overheating by turning off the devices necessary for this. If a problem with these functions occurs, it is necessary to replace the temperature sensor in the washing machine. This is quite easy to do with your own hands.

Testing and changing the element

In order to test the temperature sensor, you need to disassemble the washing machine and remove the device from its housing. This is the only way to easily test it. In most cases, the temperature sensor is located directly under the laundry tank, so getting to it is not difficult. The part should be removed as follows:

  • Remove several bolts on the back cover of the washing machine and open it,
  • Remove the wires that connect the sensor to the control board. To correctly return all the wiring and devices to their place, it is better to photograph them or mark them,
  • Carefully, slightly rocking from side to side, remove the thermistor. This can be hindered by limescale, which can be dealt with by injecting a small amount of dishwashing detergent into the gap using a syringe. The element will work better with grease.

After the device is removed, you need to check it with a multimeter and measure the resistance. To do this, do the following:

  • Attach the probes to the contacts on the device. At a temperature of 20 degrees, the readings will be 6000 ohm,
  • Place the element in hot water to heat it up. Remove and repeat the measurements. Watch how the readings on the device change. At a temperature of 50 degrees, the sensor should show 1350 ohm.

If the readings differ from those listed above, the sensor is most likely faulty and should be replaced. The device cannot be repaired, so do not try to disassemble it. You should select a heat sensor that matches your washing machine model and reinstall it.

Gas filled sensor

In order to dismantle the freon sensor yourself, you will need to remove the back cover from the machine, as well as remove the front panel on which the control unit is located. Only in this way will you have access to the part. Next, you need to do the following:

  • We find the wiring, which is located in the back of the case,
  • Carefully pull off the insulation,
  • Using a thin spike, we hook the seal that grips the copper tube and remove it,
  • Lightly pressing the base of the element, we remove it from the groove.
  • There is a special hole made in the laundry tub through which you can take out the part and remove the wire from it.

After this, you can start checking the device's functionality. The main reason for the breakdown is the failure of the freon tube. This leads to a gas leak, which is why the element stops coping with its task. Traces of leakage can be detected during inspection.

Bimetallic strip sensor

This type of sensor also requires free access to the tank. After the machine body is disassembled, you should disconnect the wires from the thermostat and check the resistance with a tester. Then you need to warm up the sensor and observe the changes in the indicators.

If the fluctuations are insignificant, you will have to change the temperature sensor. The most common cause of such a breakdown is wear of the plate.
