How to change motor brushes on a Candy washing machine

How to change motor brushes on a Candy washing machine

The well-known commutator electric motor of washing machines consists of a stator, a rotor, a tachometer, a metal housing, and several electric brushes. The latter are needed in order to supply electrical energy to the rotor. These important but fragile parts consist of a graphite tip and a long spring. Unfortunately, very often, during the operation of the “home assistant”, these elements of the electric motor grind against the commutator and fail, thus preventing the use of the washing machine. In this situation, the user can only be helped by replacing the brushes on the Candy washing machine, which we will talk about in detail today.

How do you know when it's time to update your brushes?

Repair service employees believe that if you use the machine correctly, taking all precautions, then you will need to change the motor brushes only 5 years after purchasing the device. If you do not use the device every day, but rather several times a week, then replacement will be required only after 10 years. Conveniently, Candy household appliances themselves can inform the user about the need to replace the brushes. You can understand this if you pay attention to some signs.

  • The appearance of short-term failures of the automatic control system right in the middle of the operating cycle, provided that everything is in order with the electricity.
  • The occurrence of uncharacteristic noise and crackling noises during drum rotation.
  • Deterioration in the spinning of clothes, which is associated with a low rotation speed of the drum due to the electric motor, which is unable to accelerate the container.
  • Formation of a strong burning smell during washing.
  • Demonstration of errors E8 or E08 on the display of the washing machine.

Just one of these incidents may indicate that the brushes need to be replaced as quickly as possible, what can we say about the situation when several “symptoms” make themselves felt at once. But you shouldn’t immediately buy new spare parts - first you need to partially disassemble the device to make sure that the problem is in the brushes.

Moreover, if only one part has failed, this does not mean that you can get by with one replacement, since the brushes must be in the same condition, and therefore they need to be replaced in pairs. You shouldn’t be afraid of repairs, because even a person without experience working with household appliances can handle it. The main thing is to strictly follow our instructions set out in the following paragraphs of this article.

Where can I get new parts?

The first thing you need to do in preparation for repairs is to buy new electric brushes. The easiest way is to simply dismantle the damaged parts and take them with you to the store as an example, so as not to accidentally buy the wrong items.

Dismantling will also allow you to understand which brushes are installed in your “home assistant”.

Never buy brushes without making sure that they exactly fit your washing machine. If you are not sure about the product, then it is better to consult the seller, having previously told him your brand and model of SM, so that the employee can accurately advise. Finally, if you don't want to go to the store in person, you can simply order parts online using the serial number of your Candy washing machine model.

Getting ready for renovation

After purchasing new brushes, you will need to prepare a number of tools for disassembling household appliances. You will need a small kit that every home should have just in case. Usually, you can change engine brushes in a little over an hour, so let’s not waste time, but let’s get started with the analysis right away.

  • Prepare the tools: slotted and Phillips screwdrivers, an 8 mm Torx wrench, as well as a simple pencil, felt-tip pen or pen.
  • Disconnect the machine from the power supply, water supply and sewerage.
  • Place rags or discarded towels under the equipment in case any water leaks from the last operating cycle.
  • Carefully disconnect the inlet hose and drain the water into a previously prepared basin or bucket.
  • Remove the debris filter located on the front of the CM housing in the right corner behind the decorative panel.
  • Drain the water from the drain filter and thoroughly clean it of dirt if you have not cleaned this unit for a long time.

After the described manipulations, all that remains is to move the washing machine to the center of the room in order to provide free access to all its sides. This completes the preparation, so you can begin installing new electric brushes.

Replace worn out graphite tips

We have already written that the brushes are part of the commutator motor of the washing machine, which means that you will first have to get to this unit. To do this, you must first remove the back panel of the SM case. What to do for this:

  • Remove the fixing bolts from the top cover of the device, and then remove it itself and put it aside.
  • Then remove the rear case latches and then the back panel.

Finding the electric motor is very simple - it is located directly under the washing tub. First of all, you need to remove the drive belt, for which you need to carefully pull it towards you, simultaneously turning the pulley. Also, do not forget to disconnect all wires from the electric motor so as not to accidentally break them during dismantling.

Also, do not forget to disconnect all wires from the electric motor so as not to accidentally break them during dismantling.

Finally, you can carefully examine the electric brushes located on the sides of the motor. Most often, on the Candy “home assistant” engine you can find carbon brushes under article number 481281719403. These graphite brushes can be in a black or brown case, measuring 5x12.5x32 millimeters. At the same time, the 481281719403 series is suitable for WELLING, INDESCO, CESET, HAIER engines, and can also be replaced by the 91212332, 97916670, 481281729582, 375071, CAR062UN and RI222517 series.

After examining the elements and confirming that they are indeed faulty, they need to be removed and replaced with new ones. How to do this correctly?

  • Disconnect the cable.
  • Gently slide the contact down.
  • Remove the brush by gently stretching the spring.
  • Unpack the new electric brush.
  • Install the tip into the socket.
  • Compress the spring and then place it in the socket.
  • Close the brush with the contact.
  • Connect the wire to it.

These steps must be repeated for both brushes, otherwise the elements will quickly become unusable. After completing the replacement, you need to return the electric motor to the housing. The instructions are the same, but in reverse order.

  • Attach the motor with bolts.
  • Connect all wires to the node.
  • Replace the drive belt by first sliding it onto the pulley and then onto the wheel.
  • Install the back panel of the CM, and then the cover, not forgetting to secure the elements with retaining bolts.

This completes the repair, so all that remains is to check the functionality of the washing machine during a test wash. If the problems described in the first section of the article no longer exist, then the replacement was successful, and the machine can be used again.
