Water from the sewer enters the washing machine

Water from the sewer enters the washing machine

After using a washing machine, we rightly expect that our linen and clothes will be clean and fresh. However, if water from the sewer gets into the washing machine, this desire is unlikely to come true. What to do in this case and how to return the washing to its previous quality?

Is the drain connected correctly?

Incorrect connection of the drain is a serious malfunction, which most often is the reason that sewer water is poured into the washing machine. The main signs of the siphoning effect include an unpleasant smell of clothes after washing, a malfunctioning drain, poor quality of washing, and a cycle taking longer than expected. Why does this happen and what is meant by incorrect installation of the machine?

It is necessary that the unit is installed at the body level and the drain hose is connected at a sufficient height. If these rules are violated, the pressure difference creates a siphon effect, forcing the machine to draw water from the sewer.

The sink siphon or pipe is clogged

If the drain of the machine is connected to the sink siphon, and the siphon is clogged, this may cause sewage water to flow into the washer drum. Repair in this case is simple: the siphon needs to be disassembled and cleaned. If it is connected to the sewer through a corrugated pipe, it needs to be cleaned.

Drainage from the washing machine through the sink is carried out due to the presence of an outlet with a fitting. If the sewer pipes are not clogged, the water will drain without problems, and the fitting will protect the cavity of the washing machine from unpleasant odours and splashes of wastewater.

To ensure good protection, it is recommended to point the L-shaped fitting up, not down, and periodically change the rubber gaskets on it, which tend to wear out. However, if there is a blockage in the pipes, these measures against the siphon effect are useless.

Let us clean the inside of the machine.

To enjoy the quality of washing after repairing a breakdown or malfunction, you need to prepare the washing machine for further use by cleaning it from traces of sewage water. Descaler washing machine cleaner is good for this.

  • Measure the amount of product according to the instructions and pour it into the washer tray, into the main wash compartment,
  • Run any long-term washing program idle, setting the water temperature to 60 degrees,
  • After the end of the cycle, start the rinse mode separately.

Now you can safely wash things without worrying about their quality. If the sewer drain is connected correctly, at the first manifestations of the siphoning effect, immediately clean the siphon or sewer pipes, remembering to change the rubber gaskets on the drain fitting from time to time (if the drainage is carried out through the sink). Making these simple DIY repairs is not difficult and doesn’t cost any money!
